Garth Brooks
Garth Brooks sang the National Anthem before Super Bowl XXVII in 1993. Garth hoped to debut his “We Shall Be Free” video during the broadcast on Jan. 31, 1993. He created it as a response to the L.A. riots following the Rodney King verdict in 1992. The video featured footage of the KKK, riots, wars and cross and flag burnings. At the time, the network thought the video was too controversial so Garth reportedly left the stadium with just 45 minutes to kickoff. Jon Bon Jovi was in attendance at the game, and producers actually had him on standby. Garth ended up winning his argument and the game ended up being delayed – the first time ever.

Charley Pride
Back in 1974, Charley Pride performed the National Anthem at Super Bowl VIII.
