When people think of Japan, they think of sushi, monster sized robots, and fancy overcomplicated toilets. Well one of those things just got a whole lot easier to understand. The Japan Sanitary Equipment Industry Association has agreed to unify the icons used on their baffling control panels. This is all in response to the fact that tourists are often unable to understand the controls as they include features not found on Western toilets. So… the big test! Can you identify these symbols?

Raise the lid, raise the seat, large flush, small flush, rear spray, bidet, dry, and stop. And don’t ask me what the difference is between bidet and rear spray…

The standardized icons are part of a larger movement to make Japan more welcoming to tourists ahead of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
